news_fish NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Eating fish at least twice a week seems to reduce the incidence of kidney disease in patients with diabetes, according to findings from a large British study.

Although diabetics are advised to limit dietary protein to delay the progression of kidney disease, recent observations suggest that the benefit to the kidneys may have to do with “the protein source rather than quantity,” the investigators note in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

Despite research linking fish to improved outcomes in diabetics, they add, epidemiological evidence of this benefit is scarce.

claudia Mitchell A former US Marine has become the first woman in the world to be fitted with a “bionic” arm that she can control by her thoughts alone.

Claudia Mitchell lost her left arm at the shoulder in a motorbike accident.

Her new arm works by detecting movements of a chest muscle that has been connected to the remains of nerves that once went to her real arm.

The first prototype was fitted to double amputee Jesse Sullivan four years ago.

Arm_Transplant MUNICH, Germany (AP) — A German farmer who received the world’s first complete double arm transplant said Wednesday that incredulity gave way to joy when he woke from surgery to discover he had arms again.

Karl Merk, who lost his arms in a farming accident six years ago, said he at first could not believe that the transplant appeared to have been succesful.

“It was really overwhelming when I saw that I had arms again,” said the 54-year-old, who wore a sleeveless black shirt showing clearly where his new arms had been grafted.

“These are my arms, and I’m not giving them away again,” he told reporters at the Munich University Clinic where he remains nearly three months after the 15-hour operation.

Jose_luis_garza JUAREZ, Mexico – A 450-kilogram (990-pound), bedridden man who had appealed on Mexican television for help tackling his weight problem died Tuesday of heart failure, his family said.

Emergency officials had to knock down Jose Luis Garza’s bedroom wall and put him in the back of a friend’s pickup truck to take him to a hospital as he fought for his life. The 47-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival.

Garza followed in the footsteps of the world’s fattest man, fellow Mexican Manuel Uribe of Monterrey, by taking his weight problem public. Garza lived about an hour away from Uribe in the northern town of Juarez.

plastic_surgery Men usually have the reputation of avoiding seeing a physician, even when they are sick, but the issue may be different when it comes to wanting cosmetic surgery or enhancement procedures such as Botox. Men are now seeking out doctors for non-medical reasons, and in record numbers.

Plastic surgeons are now reporting an increase in the number of male clients that are seeking a slimmer waist or stronger jaw line. The numbers have gone up by 16 percent from the year 2002 to 2007, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery. You won’t find many men discussing this issue, but cosmetic surgeons are now reporting that their services are becoming more popular by the opposite sex in what has typically been a female-dominated market.

DNA_double helix PARIS (AFP) — Researchers have identified the hereditary gene mutations behind a deadly form of childhood cancer, opening the way to genetic tests in high-risk families, according to study released Sunday.

The same wayward gene has been previously linked to lymphoma and lung cancer in adults, so afflicted children could benefit from experimental drugs designed to suppress its activity, the study says.

“This very important discovery not only helps us understand the genetic roots of this terrible disease, but also has led to dramatically new ideas for curative therapy,” said lead researcher John Maris, head of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
