A woman in California delivered what may be the nation’s second live-born set of octuplets on Monday morning, surprising doctors who expected seven babies.

The six boys and two girls — ranging in weight from 1 pound 8 ounces to 3 pounds 4 ounces — were generally doing well in incubators following their Caesarean-section delivery at Kaiser Permanente hospital in Bellflower, California, doctors said.

Three of the babies need breathing assistance, but otherwise the eight don’t appear to have serious problems, doctors said at a news conference Monday evening.

Coca-Cola Co. (KO) faces a purported class-action lawsuit initiated by a consumer-advocacy group and other litigants, who say that the beverage giant made deceptive claims about its line of VitaminWater beverages.

The consumer group, called the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said its litigation department is serving as co-counsel in the suit, which was filed Wednesday in California.

“The idea that you can improve your immunity by drinking one of these VitaminWater drinks is nonsense,” David Schardt, a senior nutritionist for the nonprofit group, said during a conference call with reporters.

Forest Laboratories and Cypress Bioscience announced January 14 that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved milnacipran (Savella), a dual serotonin- and norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), for the management of fibromyalgia.

Efficacy of the drug was established in 2 pivotal US phase 3 trials, the companies note in a press statement. Treatment with 100-mg/day and 200-mg/day doses demonstrated “statistically significant and clinically meaningful” concurrent improvements in pain, patient global assessment, and physical function, the statement adds.

Patrick Swayze has been released from hospital after voluntarily admitting himself for pneumonia treatment.

His representative Annett Wolf told People magazine that the 56-year-old actor was now back at home.

“I am happy to announce that Patrick Swayze is home after a brief hospitalisation for pneumonia,” she said.

Swayze, who went in for observation on January 9th, may have only two years to live after being diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.

Using some mouthwash brands can increase the risk of getting mouth cancer, a new study claims.

Rinsing with mouthwash containing alcohol makes it easier for cancer-causing substances like nicotine to penetrate the lining of the mouth, says the report’s author, Professor Michael McCullough.

More than 3,000 people were examined for the research, giving ‘sufficient evidence’ that using mouthwash is linked to the development of oral cancer.

TAIPEI (AFP) – Taiwanese authorities on Sunday banned smoking in all indoor public places in what campaigners say is a “milestone” in turning Taiwan into a smoke-free island.

Smoking had previously been banned in public areas including hospitals, schools, theatres, libraries, office buildings and elevators.

Under the new law, it is banned in all other public facilities such as hotels, restaurants, karaoke bars, Internet cafes and roofed transport stations.

Faith Williams, the conjoined twin who survived separation from her twin sister, Hope, at Great Ormond Street Hospital, has died.

Faith survived three major operations during her four-week life but finally died on the afternoon of Christmas Day. Doctors said that she had a 50-50 chance of surviving the most recent operation, during which the twins’ parents, Aled and Laura Williams, kept a constant vigil.
